DigitalOceanIndie

Developer-friendly cloud, fair pricing, no surprises

[01] Verdict

DigitalOcean’s got this developer-friendly vibe that’s hard to ignore. They keep it real simple with their $4/month Droplet plan, but let’s be real, that $6 tier with 1GB RAM is where most folks end up starting. What I like is the flat pricing, none of this 'cheap first year' nonsense then they jack it up. It’s steady at $4 a month, year in, year out, and that’s a breath of fresh air in this game.

Their documentation sets them apart, no doubt. It’s like having a friend who's got all the answers when you’re stuck. The API is slick, and they’ve got these managed databases and Spaces that make you think AWS-lite but without the AWS headache. Adding Cloudways to the mix last year was a smart move, bringing in that managed WordPress layer. It's a nice spread if you’re building on top of their platform.

Now, it ain’t all roses. If you’re pushing big traffic, those bandwidth overages at $0.01/GB start to sting. And sure, Hetzner might be cheaper if you don’t need your servers in the US or all that extra polish. Plus, if you want better support, you gotta pay for it. But for devs looking for a straightforward cloud with no gotchas, DigitalOcean’s pretty solid.
