Swiss end-to-end encrypted mail, free tier is real

[01] Verdict

Proton Mail is Swiss-based, audited, and the most credible name in zero-access mail. The free tier gives 1GB, the Mail Plus paid plan runs about $3.99/month billed annually (~$48/year) and unlocks custom domains, 15GB, and 10 addresses.

End-to-end encryption is the real differentiator — Proton can't read your mail even under subpoena. The catch: full E2E only works mail-to-mail with other Proton users; external mail is encrypted in transit and at rest but not end-to-end.

IMAP only works through the desktop Proton Bridge, which is a hassle on Linux/server setups. Calendar and Drive are bundled into Unlimited at $9.99/month if you want the full suite.
