FastmailIndie

Privacy-focused email, no Google, no ads

[01] Verdict

Fastmail's been holding it down since '99, straight out of Melbourne, and it's still an independent game. If you tired of Google snooping in your inbox, Fastmail got your back. For five bucks a month, you ain't getting ads or having your emails scanned. It's a real alternative for folks who want their email setup to handle custom domains without a hitch.

What really stands out is how they co-invented this JMAP protocol, which makes fetching your emails smoother and faster than the old IMAP standard. You also get calendars and contacts that actually sync right, plus two-factor authentication that ain't a hassle to set up. At $5 a month, it stays steady unlike those others that get you cheap then jack it up later.

But it ain't all perfect. There's no end-to-end encryption, so if that’s a must for you, might wanna look at Proton. And being in Australia means there’s that Five Eyes alliance thing, which some folks ain't cool with. Plus, the web interface is just okay. It's not as shiny as Gmail's, but hey, it works and does the job. If you're moving from Gmail or Outlook, their migration tools are on point, making the switch easy.

"The support is also only okay really - there’s no live chat support, for example - and while Fastmail has some good security credentials - is that really enough to justify its price tag?"
