Microsoft 365

Outlook + Exchange + Office, billed by the seat forever

[01] Verdict

Microsoft 365 Business Basic is $6/user/month annual: Exchange-hosted mail with custom domain, 50GB mailbox, 1TB OneDrive, web/mobile Office. Business Standard at $12.50/user/month adds desktop Office apps. Business Premium at $22 adds Intune and advanced security.

Exchange is still the gold standard for shared mailboxes, calendaring, and corporate policy enforcement — distribution lists, retention, eDiscovery all work properly. Outlook on Windows is genuinely good.

Downsides: the admin centers (multiple, overlapping) are a maze, license SKUs change yearly, and pricing structure is the most confusing in tech. The 2024 Outlook redesign deprecated COM add-ins and broke a generation of workflows. Microsoft also raised prices ~10% in 2024 and started forcing Copilot bundling on some SKUs.
